An SI-traceable multilateration coordinate measurement system with half the uncertainty of a laser tracker

Abstract We have validated the performance of a prototype coordinate measurement system based on multilateration by comparing it to laser tracker, i.e. well-proven instrument widely used in industry. After establishing uncertainty budget different systems, we performed position measurements with both instruments common targets. Using estimated uncertainties associated measurements, found that provided lower than tracker: average 18 µm versus 33 for distances up 12 m. The represented confidence ellipsoids are compatible between two systems: regions 95% probability, they overlap as expected, 94% cases. also measured length 0.8 m long reference scale bar at an error only 2 µm. This cross-comparison is new and key step characterization this SI-traceable system.
